Abstract

The study of the diversity of insects in the chilli plant is less conducted in Malaysia. Therefore, the objective of this study is to study the diversity of insects in the chili plant ecosystem based on different stages of chili cultivation. This study was conducted from December 2023 to May 2024 at Ladang Chili, Batu 14 Hulu Langat, Selangor using ten sticky traps. A total of 676 insect samples were successfully recorded (six orders and 23 families). Hymenoptera (348) recorded the highest number of individuals. Formicidae are the most numerous (205 individuals). The most recorded species is Paratrechina longicornis (205), followed by Ephydridae sp.1 (174), and Oceophylla smaradgina (60). The Shannon-Weiner index (H') shows the highest value during the seedling stage (H'=2.37) and the lowest after harvest (H'=1.865). A one-way ANOVA test did not show any significant differences in the diversity of insect species between pre-seedling, seedling, harvest, and post-harvest stages (p > 0.05). Further studies on the interaction of insect species in the chili plant ecosystem are needed.
