Abstract

Descemet’s membrane detachment is a rare eye condition that often occurs due to trauma or surgical complications. It happens when the membrane separates from the stroma due to the circulation of aqueous humour in the subspace between the membrane and the stroma. The present research aims to study the aqueous humour flow with the effect of changes in eye orientations and different temperature gradients. A coupled mathematical model for the aqueous humour flow and heat transfer is developed and then solved using COMSOL Multiphysics, with the finite element method implemented. The findings indicate that eye orientation influences the aqueous humour, thereby affecting the detached Descemet’s membrane. The results suggest that spontaneous reattachment may occur under certain angles of eye orientation. Additionally, changes in the temperature gradient affect the velocity and direction of aqueous humour flow. These findings may help understand the significant factors facilitating spontaneous reattachment of the detached Descemet’s membrane. The analysis may provide insight into alternative treatments for reattachment of the Descemet’s membrane without surgery.
